The Pokemon Beta battle system is mainly based on the commodity known as Experience (EXP). EXP is gained from doing just about anything, from threading to battling to anything else. EXP represents the ability of your trainer, NOT of your Pokemon as individuals. For example, in a battle, all of your Pokemon have a power of 10k EXP if your trainer EXP is 10k (not considering type advantages).
TYPE MATCHUPS
The types in Pokemon Beta are exactly the same as the main games. The only difference is how they work in-battle. Moves no longer have functional types, only flavor types that describe the move vaguely. Type matchups are now determined by the type of the Pokemon that attacks. An advantage involving only one type (ex. Water v. Fire) gives a 1.5x boost in damage (or in EXP to be more precise) to the Pokemon with the advantage, and a penalty of x0.75 to the weak typed Pokemon.If two are super-effective (ex. Water/Ground v. Fire) then there is a 2x boost to power, and a x0.5 penalty. Note that these penalties and bonuses cap out at 2x and only last while the same two Pokemon are on the field.
EVOLUTION
One of the most integral parts of the main series Pokemon games, Evolution allows one Pokemon to become much more powerful by transforming into a new, much more powerful form. In Pokemon Beta, A Pokemon evolution gives your team a static EXP bonus of 10,000. As this is an RP, some evolution methods had to have slight edits done. Those edits are as follows:
Level-Up Evolution:
Since no specific leveling system exists in this RP, level-up evolution here is based on your EXP. The exact numbers are as follows:
30,000 EXP- All unevolved Pokemon can now evolve
60,000 EXP- Any middle stage Pokemon can now evolve to its final form.
Item and Stone Evolution:
Any Pokemon that evolves with a stone, plus Gligar, Sneasel, and Happini are included here. At 20,000 EXP, you can give your Pokemon the required item for evolution. They will then evolve into their new forms. However, Stone and Item Evo's have their bonus slightly reduced to 5000 EXP due to these evolutions being easier to obtain.
Trade and Friendship Evolutions:
Since trading away and trading your Pokemon to evolve them is very strange in RP terms, we have decided to group Friendship and Trade Evolutions together.
Pokemon in this category must be extraordinarily bonded to their trainer. When an evolution thread is sent in for approval for these Pokemon, the mods will look through threads with the participant Pokemon to be sure they are actually ready for this type of evolution. Also note that trade evolutions requiring items need to be holding that item in the thread where they are approved.
Time of Day Level-Up Evolution:
Pokemon in this category simply need to have their evolution thread start at night (or day) and have it evolve by the Level-Up method.
Gender Split Evolution:
The same as Level-Up Evolutions except a specific gender requirement must be met.
Location Evolutions:
Pokemon with Location Evolutions will evolve in the following areas:
Attack-Based Evolution:
Same as Level-Up Evolutions except they need to know a specific move to evolve.
Special Evolutions:
The following Pokemon have special evolution conditions.
Eevee -> Sylveon-
Changed to a location based evolution at [?].
Wurmple -> Silcoon/Cascoon-
Evolves into PC's choice.
Tyrouge -> Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee/Hitmontop-
Same as above
Nincada -> Shedinja-
Have a free-space in the party and a free Pokeball.
Mantyke -> Mantine-
Have a Remoraid in the thread while evolving.
Pancham -> Pangoro-
Same as above except a dark type Pokemon instead of Remoraid
Inkay -> Malamar-
Now normal Level-Up Evolution
Sliggoo -> Goodra-
Same as above
Cosmoem -> Solgaleo/Lunaala-
Use the Sun or Moon Flute respectively at [?]
MEGA EVOLUTION
Mega Evolution in Pokemon Beta is a powerful tool for already strong trainers to use. For a trainer to be eligible for Mega Evolution, they must have four gym badges, and they must have a near perfect bond with the Pokemon they want to give the Mega Evolution. They also need a keystone and matching mega stone for their Pokemon.
When a Pokemon mega evolves, their EXP increases by 2x for the duration of battle.
To receive a keystone, you must challenge the Mega Evolution Guru of the Atakashii region. This can only be done after you have received your 4th gym badge.
When you have beaten them, you receive a keystone and one free Mega Stone of your choice.
Z-MOVES
Z-Moves in Pokemon Beta are powerful, one time per battle moves that have a very high damage output. Here in Pokemon Beta, Z-Moves only exist for attacking moves, and they make you hit for an additional +x2 damage. Z-Moves Exclusive to certain Pokemon do exist here, but they are VERY rare and hard to find. The other Z crystals are given to you in many ways throughout your adventure, which will be detailed in a separate thread.
HITPOINTS
There is no HP system here on Pokemon Beta. We run on an Honors System in which players decide when their Pokemon fall. Now, if you are a 300 EXP Pokemon and you're hit by a 200,000 EXP Pokemon with a supereffective Z-Move, your Pokemon very well should faint. But if you're hit with a move totaling at 150 EXP, you should be able to take more hits.
TURNS
The turns here on Pokemon Beta are shown in individual posts. Each individual post counts as one turn in which you can attack, throw up a status move (more on that shortly), switch out your Pokemon, flee if the opponent is a wild Pokemon, or use items, including Pokeballs. You can NOT do multiple moves or other actions in the same turn. This is a punishable offense.
HELD ITEMS
Here on Pokemon Beta, held items act as flavoring mostly, but some do have effects. The following items have retained their effect:
Healing Berries (Aguav, Sitrus, Oran, etc.)-
All now work the same as the Aguav Berry, restoring 1/2 health to the user. Confusion won't be applied in any way, though
Amulet Coin-
When held by a Pokemon who entered the battle, and if the player asks for Poke, the item adds a 1.5x boost to the gained Poke.
Black Sludge and Leftovers-
Restores a small amount of health to the holder each turn they are on the field. In the case of Black Sludge, it only works on Poison types, and poisons all other types.
Gems-
Makes attack +1.5x stronger if the gem type matches the holder type.
Chilan Berry and All Variants-
Turns one supereffective attack into a normal attack.
Choice Band/Specs and Choice Scarf-
Both give a 1.5x bonus to the holder, but it locks them into one move until they switch out.
All Plates-
Gives a 1.25x bonus to the Pokemon's attacks.
Lum Berry and Status-specific Variants-
Gives a one time status effect cure.
Evolution Items-
Have no in-battle effects.
Everstone-
Will prevent a Pokemon from evolving, even if all requirements are met. Exists for flavor purposes.
Eviolite-
If the Pokemon is below their requirement for their next evolution, they gain a 1.5x boost to their defensive EXP.
Incenses-
Allows for the breeding of Baby Pokemon
Focus Sash-
Allows a Pokemon one extra turn to stay up. Next turn, if they are damaged, they will go down.
Liechi Berry and Variants-
Raises respective stat when the Pokemon is about to go down.
Power Items-
Increase EXP gained by 1.5x if the Pokemon holding entered the thread.
Red Card-
When hit by an attack, the Pokemon switches out.
Smoke Ball-
Allows the holder to leave the battle.
Toxic and Burn Orb-
Inflicts the holder with Toxic or Burn.
All Legendary Items-
Will be detailed in the Legendary thread.
STATUS EFFECTS AND MOVES
Status Effects and Moves work very differently on Pokemon Beta. But these will not be enabled during the Beta.
